Check scanned PDF text before trusting an AI summary

Compare a scanned page with its recognized text. Use a fictional exercise to catch identifier, unit and approval errors before summarizing a document.

Published

A summary can repeat an error introduced before summarization begins. Before relying on important details from a scanned PDF, compare the text you plan to use with the visible source page.

Start with three kinds of detail: identifiers, units and words that change a decision, such as not. The exercise below shows how to record a mismatch without guessing a correction.

This is a general document-checking method, not a walkthrough of PDF AI or another app. Both practice texts are manually written, fictional examples. The practice cards and log template retain their English wording so you can compare the exact text. They are not output from an OCR engine, a scanned PDF or a tested AI workflow.

Why readable pages and recognized text can differ

Optical character recognition, or OCR, turns text in an image into machine-readable text. Adobe's documentation on correcting scanned text describes searchable recognized text behind an original scanned image and a review process for uncertain recognition. That is a reason to compare the two, not proof that every mistake will be flagged.

The documentation was checked September 27, 2026; it lists September 23, 2025 as its update date. Its controls belong to Acrobat. This guide does not claim equivalent controls in Sophon products.

AI tools may use extracted text, page images or another combination of inputs. Checking copied text does not establish what a particular AI tool received. You still need to check the resulting summary against the source.

Before you start

Use an authorized document and keep an untouched original. For practice, use only the invented card below. No upload, subscription or OCR operation is needed to complete this reading exercise.

For a real PDF, use a viewer that lets you inspect the page clearly. If copying text is available and permitted, compare the copied text with the visible page. If it is unavailable, do not assume the page contains no text or try to bypass restrictions. A failed search likewise does not establish that a fact is absent.

Choose the details that matter to your task. Checking a few fields is not a certificate that the rest of the document is correct.

Exercise: find three mismatches

Imagine you are preparing a short inventory update. Treat this manually written card as the exercise's source, not as a screenshot or a real warehouse record:

Fictional source card — Cedar practice record, page 1
Line 1: Item ID: AB-0108
Line 2: Package mass: 10 kg
Line 3: Dispatch not approved

Now compare it with this deliberately incorrect, manually written transcription. It simulates mistakes for teaching; no recognition software produced it.

Deliberately incorrect practice transcription
Line 1: Item ID: AB-O108
Line 2: Package mass: 10 g
Line 3: Dispatch approved

Before reading the answer table, write down each mismatch, its location and whether you would use the transcription as it stands. Check the characters and units, not only whether the sentence sounds plausible.

Answer table

Source locationSource valueIncorrect transcriptionDecision
Page 1, line 1AB-0108AB-O108The character after the hyphen is zero, not letter O. Do not use the transcribed ID.
Page 1, line 210 kg10 gThe unit changed. A matching number does not make the field correct.
Page 1, line 3Dispatch not approvedDispatch approvedThe missing not reverses the approval state. Do not treat this as authorization.

The expected conclusion is: Do not summarize from this incorrect transcription. All three fields differ. For this exercise, the clear source card supports a separate checked excerpt:

Checked excerpt from fictional Cedar practice record, page 1, lines 1–3:
Item ID: AB-0108
Package mass: 10 kg
Dispatch not approved
Scope: these three lines only; not a review of an entire document.

This is an answer key, not a successful product test. It does not show an error rate or predict how an OCR engine will handle a real file.

Keep an exception log for real documents

Use a short record you can inspect later:

Document and version:
Page and nearby heading:
Field:
Visible source value:
Copied or extracted value:
Status: matched / mismatch / unable to verify
Action and reviewer:
Unresolved question:

If the source itself is blurred or ambiguous, record unable to verify. Do not infer an identifier from nearby entries or choose whichever value makes the summary sound better. Request a clearer authorized source or ask the document owner.

If you correct a working copy with an appropriate tool, retain the original and recheck the correction. Do not assume other fields were fixed at the same time. For application support, provide the version, attempted operation and a non-sensitive reproduction—not a private document you lack permission to share.

Summarize only the material you checked

For this exercise, a narrow request could be:

Example request: Write one sentence using only the checked excerpt below. Keep the item ID, mass unit and approval state unchanged. Attribute it to the fictional source card. Do not authorize dispatch or infer missing facts. State that the scope is these three lines only.

Paste the checked excerpt, not the incorrect transcription. The prompt describes a task; it cannot guarantee correct output or prevent unauthorized actions. Use your application's permission controls and review the result yourself.

Manually written example answer, not model output: “The fictional Cedar practice record lists item AB-0108 with a package mass of 10 kg and says dispatch is not approved; this statement covers only page 1, lines 1–3.”

Compare any actual answer with all three source fields. Reject it if it changes the ID, drops the unit or turns a recorded approval state into an instruction to act. Finding one correct field is not enough.

Choose the next step for your document

Sophon’s PDF AI page separates the two store listings and their stated capabilities. Check the listing relevant to your platform rather than assuming the same OCR or AI workflow exists everywhere. The product policy directory helps you find the applicable policies before sharing files.

For your next document, keep one small record: what you checked, where you found it, and what remains uncertain. A useful summary should preserve those limits.
